Eternal Perspectives: Anniversaries are Meant to be Celebrated

Anniversaries cause us to look back and consider how far we’ve come and what we can do

to make future adjustments or amends.

Eternal Perspectives by Sally Bair

This month marks the 20th year of writing my column Eternal Perspectives. It means I have written and submitted 1,040 messages to you, my readers. Most have been original devotionals, yet some have been rewritten during vacations or extra-busy times. All have been offered with the purpose of sharing God’s holy Word. Responses have varied. I’ve received words of honor and thanks but I also have received occasional criticism for my commentary. Whatever the response, I have been blessed to continue in this ministry. So far, the Lord has given me no indication to quit writing for His glory. Of interest is the fact that the Bible cites countless occasions for celebration. The Old Testament feasts and holy days are still remembered by His people, the Jewish nation. And David wrote in Psalm 119:16: “I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your Word.”

The Word of God is so memorable in power that even the New Testament words of Paul urge us never to forget. “If then you were raised with Christ, seek the things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2)

We who have submitted to a life with Christ, however, may find such words difficult to follow. We’re surrounded by earthly, worldly temptations. But God’s Word has an answer for that. It tells us that His power to keep us from wrongdoing is stronger than our sinful desires. Whatever we face, be it the harmful habits of eating unhealthy or too much food, indulging in drugs or pornography, or whatever, we can depend on God’s Word to empower us to make the right choices. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for…correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for

every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Another powerful verse is from Hebrews 4:12, which begins: “The Word of God is living and active, sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit …”

The Bible also promises that the more time we spend reading it, meditating on and learning from it, the easier it will become to set and keep our minds on what is right. In other words, every day can become a time to celebrate Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. A daily anniversary.

Lord, thank You for Your Word, the crux of our faith, that causes us to celebrate

with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
