Eternal Perspectives: Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life

HALLELUJAH! JESUS IS ALIVE!

What an awesome God we serve! During Jesus’ time on earth, He proclaimed to be the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Door of the Sheep, the Good Shepherd, the True Vine, the Way the Truth and the Life … and the Resurrection and the Life. As we meditate on each of these metaphors listed in the book of John, their richness can bring us hope and joy, peace and comfort, and much more. This week we will concentrate on His resurrection.

“I am the Resurrection and the Life”

Whether we like to face the fact or not, we’re going to die someday. Some refuse to talk about death and will not make preparations for it. For the sake of loved ones, I encourage everyone to consider their future demise in terms of health care, finances, and final wishes. I’m in the process of planning my death in those terms, even though I may live to be 100.

The long process includes choosing and finalizing a host of details. Who shall I choose as my power of attorney? How should I divide my assets? Will I be buried or cremated? Which mortuary will I hire to deal with my remains? Where will my funeral take place? What nursing care facility should I use, if necessary? Do I want to be resuscitated if I need such a traumatic procedure?

When I complete my plans, it will ease the burden on my loved ones in making difficult decisions regarding my physical death. Yet far more important than making end-of-life arrangements is focusing on my spiritual security. With Easter fast approaching, now is the opportune time to think about life eternal. Jesus promised that once we die physically, if we believe in Him we will receive life forever. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” (John 11:25)

John 3:16 is so popular, that many people can quote Jesus’ words. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

The critical word in this verse is “believe.” In New Testament Greek language, according to Young’s Concordance, the word pisteuo defines “believe” as “adhere to, trust and rely on.” This definition is much deeper than simply saying we believe in God. Even Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.’” (Matthew 7:21)

Belief in God and His Son Jesus requires that we become willing to live in a close, personal relationship with Him, and to love Him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Thank You, Lord, for loving us so much that You died for our sins. Thank You for Your resurrection which promises that we too will be resurrected after we die physically. With believers around the world, we shout, “Hallelujah! He is risen!” with joy and gratitude. In Jesus’ name, amen.
