Eternal Perspectives: Jesus is the Rock

Among other descriptive names for Jesus, The Rock is the one we can cling to in all circumstances. He is the only totally dependable One we can count on. He is solid, immovable, and impermeable.

The Rock

I used to enjoy hunting for agates and other pretty rocks and stones along the beach and gravel roads. The interesting ones I kept and the flat ones I skipped in the water. I learned that the diversity in rocks is limitless. Big or small, colorful or drab, they can evoke good or bad feelings. The farmer whose soil seems to grow better rocks than corn isn't happy with them. Rockhounds, however, delight in searching the country for certain kinds of rocks and stones. Still others massage their “pet rocks” as a way to relax. A person can spend a lifetime learning about rocks.

The Bible mentions rocks numerous times. The Israelites built memorials to God, using rocks. God used two rocks on which he wrote the Ten Commandments. God is called the Rock of Israel, the Rock whose works are perfect, our Rock and our Salvation. And Jesus told his disciples that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could say to a mountain—the largest rock of all— “Be moved.”

The most familiar Scripture passage about a rock is found in Matthew 7 where Jesus uses the analogy about building. If we build our spiritual house on a rock, He said, we will withstand the winds and rains of hardship that come our way. That's because He is the Rock: stable, strong, and secure. "As you come to Him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture, it says: 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone…'." (1 Peter 2:4-6) For those who believe in Him, the passage adds, that stone (Christ) is precious. But for those who do not believe, it will cause their downfall.

Some rocks are a delight to the eye, as God is a delight to the soul who trusts in Him. Some rocks are colorful, as God is full of beauty. Some rocks are large and immovable, as God is our strength. We can count on Him for all things.

Lord, thank You for rocks and stones that remind us of Your unchangeable and immovable love for us. As we encounter the winds and rains of adversity that come our way, help us remember daily that You are our security and strength, the Rock of our salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
