Eternal Perspectives: The Best Bridge to Cross

Our world is full of bridges that span rivers, gorges, and even lakes. Most are sturdy and reliable. The bridge to eternal life with Christ is the sturdiest, most dependable, and most satisfying. As with other bridges, it is our choice to cross or not.

Bridges

On a British Columbia hiking trail, my husband and I encountered a half-wrecked, wooden bridge damaged by flood waters below. It tilted at a precarious angle. One railing had been destroyed, so I clung to the remaining, damaged rail as I crossed.

Not all bridges are as rickety and undependable as the one we crossed. Others are sturdy, the kind we can cross with confidence.

Scripture tells about a bridge we should all cross. The word bridge lends itself to Jesus’ words in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is our bridge to the Father and the chasm that separates us from Him is our sin.

We were born in sin, we carry it in our mortal bodies, and we will die in it unless we cross the chasm. Jesus is the bridge that carries us to God’s Kingdom of “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17)

We can try to skirt the sin issue by doing good or assuming we’re “good enough” to gain entry into heaven. We can search for another bridge of belief. Or we can avoid His bridge altogether, content to remain in our sinful state forever.

Many won’t cross the Jesus bridge to God because they think it’s too scary, uncomfortable, or unnecessary. But God, through His Word and Spirit, draws us to His bridge and makes it easy for us. All it requires is the gift of faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, who paid the price for our sins and offers us forgiveness, blessing, and eternal life. His bridge is nothing like the rickety one we crossed in Canada.

Lord, thank You for making a way for us, a way of being right with You, filled with Your peace and joy. Cause us to avoid the rickety bridges around us and cross the only one that matters today and forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
