Eternal Perspectives: Uneven Roads

GOD’S ROADS ARE ALWAYS STRAIGHT

Life is full of bumpy and even dangerous roads, but we can count on God’s Word and Spirit to guide us along His safe, straight paths.

Uneven roads

One year when we took a shortcut across Idaho, it turned out to be a forest road meant for fire crews. It was uneven in every respect, narrow, bumpy, and dangerous for our motorhome. We made it across, but later I overheard my husband tell a friend that at one point the outer tires went off the road, hovering over the mountain precipice. Even he was scared, he said.

On our trips to Alaska, we often faced bad roads and signs that said, “Caution” and showed a diagram of two wheels on the surface and two in the air, exactly what we had experienced in Idaho. Other signs included Narrow Road, Do Not Pass, Sharp Curve Ahead, Rough Road, Hill, and Drive Slowly.

God’s Word contains danger signs, too, meant to keep us securely on the right spiritual track. My favorite is Psalm 1, which points to life’s dangers but offers the perfect alternative.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water; that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1-3)

The psalmist is telling us that if we want a blessed life, a life free of danger and anxiety, we must observe God’s do’s and don’ts. That means choosing not to think like or agree with those who have no time for God and not to act like the people around us who insist on their own way rather than God’s way. It means not linking up with those who might pull us away from Him. In other words, when we think, behave or belong to anything ungodly, we face the danger of walking on spiritually uneven ground.

Conversely, when we wisely focus on His Word, meditating on His promises and instructions for living, He will give us His peace and joy. When we face situations that may seem like narrow, curvy, dangerous roads, we will seek His direction. Even memorizing Scripture verses can assure us of making wise choices, especially when we don’t have a Bible handy or are tired, hungry, or anxious.

Lord, thank You for the signs in Your Word that guide us in our walk through life. Help us to trust You above all else for our well-being and growth as believers of Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, amen.
