Our world is filled with distractions. Whether we see them, think them, or allow ourselves to fill our time, they can easily pull us away from listening to God. How is it with you?

Listening Well
A female Canada goose kept her yellow, fluffy chicks close to her, away from danger, by her constant honking. They all obeyed—except one. The little rascal was too intent to see what lay ahead to pay any attention to its pleading mama. The scene reminded me of my own children who, like countless other youngsters, sometimes refused to listen to authority. Even when they knew better.
I was a recalcitrant child at times, too. And spiritually, I find myself in the same dilemma too often. Some days I wrap myself in a soundless bubble during my daily pursuits, like a jogger wearing earbuds. Perhaps you can relate? Likely many of you also turn on your earbuds so you can’t hear God’s voice. Or do you ever find yourself turning off the truth about yourself, believing you’re not smart enough to do a certain task, not pretty enough to fit in, or too old to change your habits? You may think you’re not spiritual enough to pray or, God forbid, think you’re too holy to try a new way of worship.
Our earbuds may be outside distractions, too, such as watching too much TV, obsessing with Facebook posts, or insisting we stay close to our cell phones. When we use such distractions, even the necessary ones, they become time-robbers and keep our spiritual ears from hearing God’s voice. In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus taught that when we hear His Word, the cares of the world can choke it out, the devil can snatch it away or tough times can cause us to lose faith in the Lord. But when we hear—that is, listen intently with both ear and heart—we will lead a fruitful life for Him.
As we choose to listen to His Word, to His quiet voice, and to our consciences, God will speak to us in ways that bring His joy, peace, and freedom from the bondage of sin. Jesus said, “Blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear.” (Matthew 13:16) He also told His followers, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life …” (John 10:27)
Lord, thank You for Your voice that comes to us through Your Word and Spirit. We want to hear Your voice over the din of the world. Help us remember to take the time to listen to You more carefully each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
